Argyle is a geometric pattern of different colors on a solid background. The colors range from rich to poor, beautiful to quite hideous. Yet they are knit together to form a whole cloth and garment that goes in and out of fashion and often annoys people. Seems like a decent metaphor. If you're an opinionated political junkie, you don't need more than that.
Guild, which is defined as an association of people with similar interests or pursuits, also has a medieval and slightly romantic flavor. That sounded good, too. Wearing argyle to a guild meeting will earn respect and possibly free gifts and prizes. But maybe not.
